Where these numbers come from

WhatsApp publishes no catalog image dimensions at all. These are Meta's, because a WhatsApp Business catalog is a Meta Commerce catalog — every page telling you “WhatsApp requires 500 x 500” is quoting a sentence WhatsApp never wrote.

Meta also caps catalog images at 8 MB, and accepts JPEG and PNG.
