How to Get More WhatsApp Channel Followers for Free

How to grow a WhatsApp Channel with real followers: invite contacts, share your link and QR code, add it to your website, and skip bought followers.

Short answer: Put your Channel link where your audience already is: your contacts, your Status, your website and your shop counter. Then post updates people want to forward. WhatsApp does not take requests to add a Channel to its directory, so these are the parts you control. Do not buy followers or use bots. They raise the number without adding anyone who reads your updates.

A new WhatsApp Channel starts with no followers, and you cannot apply for a place in front of new people. WhatsApp says requests to add channels to Explore, Recommendations or Suggestions are not accepted. Your first followers come from you sharing the Channel.

Every step below is free and brings in real people who chose to follow you.

1. Make the Channel worth following before you share it

People can preview your most recent updates before they follow. An empty Channel gives them nothing to judge, so post a few updates first.

Then check the three things they see next to those updates:

  • Name. Say what the Channel is. The Channels Guidelines ask admins for a title that reflects the content and helps people choose.
  • Description. Say what you post and how often, such as "New arrivals and restock alerts, about once a week."
  • Icon. Use your logo or your photo, so people recognize you.

You can change all three at any time.

2. Invite your contacts

Your contacts are the quickest place to start. Open your Channel, then go to Channel info > Invite followers. You can select up to 64 contacts and add a message.

Three limits to know before you send:

  • You can only invite contacts who have also saved you as a contact.
  • You cannot take an invite back once it is sent.
  • This feature is still rolling out, so you may not have it yet.

Tell people what they will get, because a bare invite gives them little reason to tap:

I've started a WhatsApp Channel for restock alerts and early sale dates. It's about one update a week, and you can unfollow any time.

Only invite people who would want these updates. An invite arrives in your private chat with that person, so it reads as a message from you.

From your Channel, you can send the link to up to five chats or groups, share it to your Status, share it to other apps, or copy it. The link starts with https://whatsapp.com/channel/.

On your Status, you can add a caption, so give a reason to follow: "I post this week's menu here every Monday." Share it again when you post something good, instead of repeating the same request.

Then copy the link to the places your audience already looks:

  • Your Instagram, TikTok or YouTube bio
  • Your email signature and newsletter
  • Your order confirmation emails
  • Your Facebook page

4. Add a Follow button to your website

People on your website are already interested in what you do, and WhatsApp lists a link on other websites or apps as one way people find a Channel.

A plain link in your footer works and costs nothing, but it is easy to miss. A floating button stays visible on every page. The WAButton WhatsApp Channel button is one way to add one: paste your Channel link, choose the text and position, and add one snippet to your site. It is included on the Free plan.

Three things to know when you set it up:

  • The visitor still decides. The button opens your Channel and the visitor taps Follow in WhatsApp. A website cannot follow a Channel for someone.
  • Laptops need a QR code. Many people browse on a laptop and use WhatsApp on their phone. Turn on the QR code so they can scan it and follow from there.
  • You can keep your chat button. One button can list up to 5 destinations, such as a chat and a Channel.

Also link to your Channel on the pages where people have just done something, such as your order confirmation or newsletter thank-you page. They have just chosen to hear from you, so a Follow link is a natural next step.

5. Print your QR code

Every Channel has a QR code you can print or save as an image. Put it where people have their phone in hand and a moment to spare:

  • On a shop counter or restaurant table
  • On packaging and receipts
  • On flyers and business cards
  • On the last slide of a talk or event

Give people a reason to scan. "Scan for restock alerts" tells them more than "Follow us on WhatsApp." Print the link beside the code too, so people can still find you if a scan fails.

Our free tool makes print layouts for a Channel link, with the link printed as text under the code:

Scan a test print with your phone before you print the full run.

6. Post updates people forward

Your followers can bring in new ones. They can share channels they like with their contacts, and a forwarded update is labeled "Forwarded" and links back to your Channel. Each forward can put your Channel in front of someone new.

People forward updates that are useful on their own. Some examples:

Who you are An update people might forward
Online shop Restock alert with the sizes back in stock
Restaurant or cafe This week's menu, or changed holiday hours
Coach or creator One tip someone can use today
Publisher or blog A one-paragraph summary with a link to the full story

Followers cannot reply to updates, but they can react with an emoji or vote in a poll. A poll is a simple way to learn what they want more of.

Do not post just to stay visible. The Channels Guidelines warn admins that too many updates, or low-quality ones, can lead people to unfollow. They do not give an ideal number. Choose a schedule you can keep, and say what it is in your description.

7. What you can and cannot do about the directory

You cannot apply for the directory or for recommendations, and requests to verify a Channel are not accepted either. WhatsApp does explain how recommendations work.

It says a machine learning system recommends channels, and the factors may include your updates, your number of followers, reactions, how often you post, and how your content compares with popular channels. The system changes often, so no one can give you a fixed formula.

The same article says the viewer's location and language have the biggest influence on what they see. The directory list is also filtered by country and language. So write your name and description in the language your audience uses, in words they would search for.

Some channels pay to be promoted and are labeled "Ad". Availability is rolling out gradually, so you may not have this option yet. An ad is different from buying followers: it shows your Channel to real people, and they decide whether to follow.

8. Why you should not buy followers or use bots

If you search for free followers, you will find services offering them in bulk. Skip them, paid or free.

  • They will not read your updates. An account added to raise a count is not there for your news. It will not forward your updates, visit your shop or become a customer.
  • They can put your Channel at risk. The Channels Guidelines do not mention bought followers by name, but they do ban fraud, including activity that "purposefully deceives" WhatsApp or its users. Actions WhatsApp can take under the Guidelines include removing a Channel from the directory or search, revoking its invite link, suspending it and banning its admins. Whether a bought following counts is WhatsApp's decision, so it is not a risk worth taking.
  • They can put your account at risk. If a service asks for your WhatsApp code, stop there. WhatsApp's security tips tell you not to share your registration code with anyone.
  • They spoil your numbers. With a padded count, you cannot tell whether your website button or your counter QR code is bringing people in.

9. Check what is working

Once you reach 100 followers, your Channel info page shows channel insights:

Tab What it shows
Growth Follows, unfollows and net follows over the past 30 days
Reach Accounts that viewed your updates, and your top regions
Followers Your total followers, the change over 30 days and top regions

WhatsApp says these numbers may be delayed by about a week, and it still labels insights as in development.

Insights do not show which link or QR code a follower came from, so try one change at a time and watch your follower count. If you use a website button, you can send button taps to your analytics tools and compare them with your follows.

Start with the steps that take a few minutes: invite your contacts, post the link on your Status, and add a Channel button to your website.

How can I increase my WhatsApp Channel followers quickly?

Start with the people who already know you: invite your contacts, post the link on your Status, and add it to your website. There is no reliable timeline, and be wary of anyone who promises you a set number of followers.

Can I ask WhatsApp to feature my Channel?

No. WhatsApp says it does not accept requests to add channels to Explore, Recommendations or Suggestions, and it does not accept requests to verify a Channel.

Does a Channel button add people to my Channel automatically?

No. The button opens your Channel and the visitor taps Follow in WhatsApp. A website cannot follow a Channel for someone.

Will my followers see my phone number?

No. WhatsApp says followers will not see your profile name, picture or phone number. Updates come from the Channel.

Is there a limit on how many followers a Channel can have?

WhatsApp describes a Channel as a way to share one-way updates with an unlimited audience.
